Hey friends! Welcome to this week’s edition of The Land of Random!
The unbearable Summer Heat is upon us - and so is a massive Poblano pepper I need to pick from my garden!
What should I do? Make some salsa? mix it into guacamole?
hmmmmm.
I finally watched Guardians of the Galaxy 3! It was quite good - quite possibly the last good movie to come out of Marvel, but I know thems’ fighting words haha.
I’m not a car guy by ANY MEANS (well, the Rezvani Vengeance is cool) - but that Toyota Prius GR concept is pretty neat.
I never would have imagined “cool” and “prius” in the same sentence before, but I guess everyone has to adjust these days after the ole Cybertruck unveil.
I have one quick little survey I need your help with if you can. I’m considering optimizing the newsletter email subject lines to be more “copywritey” and fun but wanted to see what y’all think.
Let me know! Let’s hop in shall we?
🛝Play With HTML
I’ve always been an advocate of making the internet more fun/interactive.
A “little bit of spice” as they say . . . it’s fun when there’s
movable items
interactive gifs / buttons
autoplaying lofi music
website homepage minigames
Websites like kinopio.club or mmm.page have interactive landing pages - which is AWESOME.
There’s a new open-source library for interactive HTML elements called Play HTML, and it looks fairly easy to implement.
Rather than eye-crossing long bits of code, these can be implemented with single attributes.
Like this.
<div id="couch" can-move style="font-size: 80px">🛋</div>
playhtml is an open-source library that enables interactive capabilities with minimal code and maximal expressiveness by handling real-time syncing, persistence, and reactivity . . .most of the HTML elements on this page are collaboratively interactive! Trying clicking, dragging, and playing around with them. If anyone else is on the site, you'll see their cursors and how they're playing with the elements too (source)
You can turn on and off lights, make things spin, create mini chats, move things around the page - and more!
The creator of the project - Spencer - is also part of a really cool-looking group that creates fun website stuff and shares them. Kinda wish I could watch the footage, but I can definitely just search the web for each of these projects.
For example → This Wriggly Synth or this social network for your home called “Dwelling”
Lots of projects to get lost in.
Go check out Play HTML at the links!
🍇The Sad Bastard Cookbook
Ever discover a cookbook that’s written so whimsically you fall in love?
I stumbled across “The Sad Bastard Cookbook” and was drawn in by its down-to-earth and relatable writing style.
It reminded me of The Supper of the Lamb, another cookbook/work of reflection.
Here’s the abstract . . .
Life is hard. Some days are at the absolute limit of what we can manage. Some days are worse than that. Eating—picking a meal, making it, putting it into your facehole—can feel like an insurmountable challenge. We wrote this cookbook to share our coping strategies. It has recipes to make when you've worked a 16-hour day, when you can't stop crying and you don't know why, when you accidentally woke up an Eldritch abomination at the bottom of the ocean. But most of all, this cookbook exists to help Sad Bastards like us feel a little less alone at mealtimes. (source)
A most intriguing description, eh?
Inside is a wide variety of recipes ranging from ramen to “Eat a Dill Pickle Out of the Jar While Standing in Front of the Fridge.“
Recipes begin with the dead simple version - but some include “mid” or “God-tier” ingredients depending on how intense you wanna make it.
Spoilers. Did you know hash browns taste good in instant ramen? I did not know this.
I say with blunt honesty, if you take a look at this cookbook, you will literally read it for the commentary.
Trust me - it’s FILLED from stem to stern with wit.
Go check it out at the link!
😄 Live Near Friends
Drive. Drive. Drive.
That’s the extent of the suburban hellscape sprawl that has infested much of the Western world.
We want to hang out with friends - that’s a 15-35 minute drive there and back.
And so
Those dark memes that say things like “you’ll probably only see your friend _______ four more times in your life” tend to be more accurate than our consciousness would like to admit.
What if we could live closer to our friends?
Instead of planning things days or weeks in advance - living down the road makes hanging out as easy as a “what ya up to” text.
There’s a new website called “Live Near Friends” that hopes to help you do just that.
Basically - this website allows you to set up alerts for homes/rentals that are available within a 5 minute walk of your dwelling.
You can share your link with friends so they can subscribe to alerts about homes near you!
I gave it a test - and it’s pretty easy to set up. Just enter your name, email, address, and get your link.
Each digest contains a few homes/rental units available near your domicile.
Very cool!
Go check it out, and send a link to your BFF’s.

Novelty Voicemail Database
I continue to be amazed at what I find on the internet. and this database is no exception. It’s a TON of bizarre voicemail recording clips. Hilarious.
🤖 AI AHHHHHHHHH
I know I usually share these links without much commentary, but I truly mean it when I say the next decade is going to be unhinged. Today’s links will demonstrate this.
AI assisted short films are already being made and we’re in the first inning.
I’m looking forward to autonomous AI’s in open world games, but it’ll get really nuts - entire discords, social apps - all filled with AI’s.
Games are gonna be build with insane tools like this one
Ahhhhhhh creating entire scenes in real time from just a few photos
TikToks You Can’t Miss
A true fish feeding frenzy I see
More stores should do this - like a IRL easter egg
Florida Man takes on Area 51
unfortunately, I will never be reviewing one of these
That’s all for this week. See you next time!
Definitely salsa! Today, I made roasted tomato salsa with a poblano and other salsa stuff. It was so good. The Sad Cookbook looks like a hoot!
