🥃The Rise of 0 Proof Alcohol, Body Hacking, and Coffee Cups made of Coffee
Drink Coffee out of coffee
Hey friends! Hope all is well with you this week.
As I write this newsletter, I’m watching the Russian movie “Guardians.” It’s an Avengers knockoff - but I’ve been dying to see it. 🤣
If you want to get into some “Russian SciFi Vibes” I highly recommend watching the SciFi horror movie Sputnik. It’s really well done!
I’ve always loved watching International movies and TV, like Into the Night - among many others.
Personally, Neil Blomkamp is my favorite director. District 9 and Chappie are amazing!
Did you know that some of the weapons from District 9 are “allegedly” from the pre-work on the canceled Halo movie?
Don’t get me started on the fact that Halo Nerf blasters didn’t come out till Millennials were old.
Remember THESE days?
Well, before I start waxing eloquently about the auncient glory Nerf, let’s hop on into today’s topics, shall we?
🥃The Rise of 0 Proof Alcohol
Once upon a time, O’doul’s was kinda the only one in its class. A non-alcoholic beer.
Well, the industry is growing.
Could it be the next nascent Billion dollar industry? as Meatless meat is currently working towards?
One that caught my eye is Ritual Zero Proof. It looks like alcohol, and apparently, it tastes like alcohol.
Here’s part of Ritual’s statement.
The goal wasn't to replace liquor -- bite your tongue! -- but to add a new tool to our cocktail kit. Another way to mark a moment. Simple enough, right? Yeah, not so much. It took more than a year and hundreds of iterations to perfect our recipes . . We weren't interested in a glass of "something." We're not interested in new-age goop that defies explanation, or fancy spa water that bears no resemblance to liquor. We weren’t satisfied until it tasted and smelled and felt like the real thing. A new way to make an old favorite (or an Old Fashioned.) (Source)
It’s pretty interesting. The goal is a drink that sits alongside alcohol - a real drink with real taste - not just a bland subsitute.
It ain’t no 2010 Meatless Morning Star chicken nuggets.
Sober Curiosity and the “Less alcohol” movement is starting to grow stronger.
However, there’s still a taste for the taste so to speak - and - an industry is growing to accommodate it.
Don’t believe me?
Check out this selection from Delish of Non-Alcoholic Spirits
Here’s some non-alcoholic Beers
Take a look at some of those - there’s a lot of work and design going into these beerless beers and whiskeyless whiskies.
I think this industry is going to continue to grow significantly in the next decade.
What do you think?
Check out Ritual Zero Proof at the link! Heck, you can even order it via Amazon if you want to try it.
🧠Body Hacking
You’ve probably heard about the future of tech, or played games like Cyberpunk.
Tech isn’t just something we use - it’s something that exists as a part of us. That’s a theory, at least.
Well, there’s some people trying to make it happen.
The edgy world of biohacking is here - and it’s quite literally in our fingertips (if you go the magnet route).
If you want to go down the rabbit hole, check out Aaron Traywick, the deceased founder of Ascendance Biomedical, or the genetic hacking on Odin.
That’s some NEXT LEVEL WILD.
Please, please do not buy or try a CRISPR kit. It’s not safe.
Well, today - Meet Dangerous Things.
Ever wanted to implant a NFC chip so you can enter buildings?
or a RFID chip so you can carry your identity around?
Or a Magnet so you can have a extra “sense?”
or a LED light?
Heck, I bet you could inject your Private key for that ole Bitcoin Wallet.
What the heck is this, you ask? It’s a little bitty glass capsule that you inject into your hand (that loose skin between the thumb and index finger).
See those injectors? That’s what you use to put it into your hand. It’s absolutely wild! 🤯
I personally don’t recommend doing it.
I mean - check out this warning.
This kit definitely contains dangerous things. While the chip implants included in this kit have undergone several quality checks during manufacture and has been put through a battery of tests, it has not been certified by any government regulatory agency for implantation or use inside the human body. Use of the devices in this kit are strictly at your own risk. (Source)
Yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
Body augmentation is still in its infancy, and a daring group is leading the charge.

☕Coffee Cups Made of Coffee
Coffee is simply not enough.
You must drink coffee in cups made from coffee.
Well, now you can!
Kaffeform is making coffee cups from coffee grounds and “other sustainable materials.”
It’s so cool!
We always talk about taking small steps to waste less and use more.
Well, Julian Lechner “began experimenting with coffee grounds. Three years later, he had discovered the unique formula: recycled coffee grounds and renewable raw materials were transformed into the durable, robust material Kaffeeform. Which then became the Kaffeeform cup.”
And how does he collect the coffee grounds?
A bicycle courier collective gathers used coffee grounds from selected cafes and roasteries in Berlin and then brings them to a social workshop. There, the grounds are dried and preserved. At small plants in Germany, the material is then compounded and shaped into coffee cups. Once back in the social workshop in Berlin, the cups receive their final polish, are packaged, and sent to cafes, shops, and end customers. (Source)
Isn’t that so cool? It’s a small step, but Kaffeform is taking one thing - Coffee Grounds out of the landfill and putting it to good use.
Kaffeeform promotes the principle of a circular economy. The rising consumption of coffee around the world is producing a growing amount of coffee grounds, most of which goes straight into the bin. This is where Kaffeeform comes in: it reuses otherwise wasted resources as a raw material. The innovative material resulting from this is exceptionally durable. It finds its perfect second life as a coffee cup. The coffee cycle is complete. (Source)
What other things that we throw out could we pursue in a “Circular Economy?”
We throw out so many things every day - which of those things could we put to better use? I mean - before today - I would have never considered coffee grounds as something that could be used to make a coffee cup.
It’s an interesting thought to get rattling around your head.
How can we achieve Net-zero waste?
It’s something worth thinking about.
