Motion Detecting WIFIš¤, Run your computer in the Apocalypse, and The Drink Exchange!
Why buy cameras when your WIFI can track people?
Hey everyone! Howās October treating you so far? As Iām writing this it just dawned on me that itās the infamous 13th! š±
I may or may not have watched all 3 Hell House LLCās in a row on Friday night. They are great found footage films - and the first two are very, very scary. Check them out if you can! Also, Found Footage is a great film genre. Just saying.
A Wifi Router/Motion Detectoršµļøāāļø
Woah! Slow down on buying those privacy-invading cameras from Google and Amazon. (Sarcasm - or is it really sarcasm? š¤) Linksys has introduced a new āAwareā service for their Mesh system that uses wifi signals to track motion.
While Linksys hasnāt specifically described the technology involved here,Ā the basic conceptĀ behind the idea is that the Wi-Fi signals are set up by the router to bounce off each other and cancel each other out; something in motion will interfere with this process and be detected. However, this may be the first time this technology is available in a retail product. Source
Sounds really cool, right? There are, of course, many questions we do not know yet. How does the technology work? How accurate is it? The nice thing about a camera is that if it sees someone and alerts me - I can look at the feed to see who it is.
Now - with a motion detector, it could be a giant cockroach for all I know. (I canāt see what it is, so how do I know that itās a person?) Linksys does have a few scant details about motion sensitivity levels on their website - thereās a sliding sensitivity scale that goes from all motion to only people. You can set which one you want it to go off for, and set monitoring times.
Honestly, I just really want to know how the technology works - and I want to know how well it works.
If any of you buy it, let me know! Check out more details here.
Windows, Linux, IOS, Android, Ubuntu, Collapse OS š»
Alright, everybody! Iāve got a brand new Operating System to introduce to you.
I know youāve used Windows or Linux all your life. Youāre used to using your Android or Iphone.
But are you ready for the coming collapse? You know, the one where society falls apart, cell phones stop working, and electricity/running water is no longer a normal thing for Western society.
Well - thatās where Collapse OS comes in. Itās an open-source operating system for the end of modern civilization.
Here are the authorās thoughts about the coming collapse.
With regards to this project, there are two important stages of collapse. The first one is when the global supply chain is broken and the second one is when, in a particular community, the last modern computer dies.
There are decades between the two. Sure, modern technology is generally fragile and unfixable, but there are many robust modern computers hardware and those that are lucky enough to run a self-contained operating system will continue to provide a modern computing environment for decades.
Therefore, Collapse OS won't be actually useful before you and I are both long dead. However, communities with good foresight will immediately start to work on creating post-collapse computers because a lot of work will have to be poured on their own local copy of it before it runs smoothly on the hardware they manage to scavenge and retrofit. They also have to become proficient in maintaining it. Their children also have to. Source
This is a project with long term goals - creating an Operating System that can be easily implemented on scavenged electronics. Itās essentially a project to save the last 50 or so years worth of advances in as survivable a form as possible.
Take a second and think about the worth of a computer at its bare bones. Math, Text editing, and some other features.
These things are critical to creating an advanced civilization. Think of the sheer raw power of a spreadsheet program like Excel. You could run an entire city through spreadsheets, documents, and a way to save/transmit data.
Weāve gotten so obsessed with all of the cool stuff computers can do that weāve kind of forgotten how incredible the basic stuff is - and how much progress it has allowed.

The Drink Exchange šŗ
Have you ever messed around with the Stock Exchange? Pretty fun stuff - and stressful too! Iāll always kick myself about not buying more shares of Carvana. I bought one share at $15 - now itās $80. Oh well.
Anyways, the fun part is watching the prices go up and down. Good news? Up. Bad news? Down. You know the drill.
However, did you know that someone has brought a stock exchange to the restaurant business?
A company called the Drink Exchange has created an algorithm to regulate drink prices like a stock exchange. Prices go up and down based on demand. Honestly, any bar that has this will probably do really well - It has built-in virality. People love cool stuff - but they love good deals more. The Drink Exchange brings both of those elements to the table.
People will buy more - especially when they see good deals. The more beer they drink - the more food they will probably order. More purchases - More revenue. š
Itās a unique concept - and a brilliant one.
