Hey friends! Welcome to this week’s edition of The Land of Random.
It’s been a CRAZY week this week.
First - I almost blacked out on the road driving and I have no idea why. Of course - it was deeply unsettling, much like this. (Yes I went to the doctor and such - hopefully it was just low blood sugar or something).
I am quite thankful for life - and really, really need to write my “dead man trigger” newsletter issue . . . just in case of course.
Second - I came down with a wretched stomach bug on Friday (which is why today is a link invasion).
I feel rather ill and unsteady on my feet - soooooo it’s a link invasion day.
In terms of random news - Foxtrot shut down - so the whole “grocery store that’s also a cafe” idea seems to be struggling.
In more positive news - I finished the second season of Invincible. It was great! I can’t wait for season 3 (and I hope there’s a 4 and 5). Fallout is next on my list to watch.
Have you ever heard of phone to note? It’s an incredible free tool where I can send SMS or telegram messages to Kinopio or Roam Research. Definitely check it out if you can!
I’ve been using it to send little notes to my Kinopio Inbox so I can move them around to my own Land of Random spaces.
Shall we dive in?
Moon River
The vibes are immaculate. Enjoy Moon River, the light of the moon . . . .and click around on the page for a surprise!
Retro KFC
A variation of this same meal costs like $50 now. :( While we’re on the subject - how about some Kentucky Fried Vaporwave?
Infinitown
It’s an endless city! Just keep scrolling, scrolling, scrolling . . .
Stumble Back to the Olde Internet
It’s a fun retro link spinner! Click to find fun stuff - old websites like Spacejam, and olddd Youtube videos.
Brzzy Weather
Someone made a fun little weather website. Gifs, music, lots of weather data . . . There’s some interesting use of ads too LOL.
Nintendo DS Flipnotes
The amount of work people put into designing little Nintendo DS flipnote videos is incredible. like this Super Mario one, or this Pokemon one.
Krazam TV Productions
Really cool Windows 95 style site. There’s even easter eggs in the terminal!
Pools
Liminal horror is terrifying.
The Doomscroller
A physical manifestation of our desire to scroll and scroll and scrolllllll on social media.
Sonic the Hedgehog - iHop Edition
This hilarious article details the journey of eating the Sonic menu at iHop. It’s hilarious - and I had to look up to see that this menu was real. (It is).
Freetube - Open Source YT
A desktop app to watch Youtube videos without ads - hypothetically, in Minecraft of course.
Generate 8-bit Sounds!
Mess around with 8 bit sounds. There’s a ton of settings too so you can mess around with each sound!
PikaPods
Want to run some open source web apps? host your own Ghost instance? Do it with PikaPods!
The Odd Ball
It’s a drum machine - but also a bouncy ball! This review makes it look really fun too.
0x40 Music
An anime-inspired song shuffler, complete with different anime characters for each beat. Lots of different genres! It’s inspired by an old Flash site - and now lives on in the modern web.
Bitview
Believe it or not, there are a few retro-inspired YouTube style platforms out there. Talk about niche! This site is niche.
Cool Vending Machines!
If only the USA had cool vending machines like Thailand or Japan. There’s even a mochi ice cream machine that is ALSO a game!! (The game is play until you win).
Rewild the Internet
The internet needs to become wild again -full of diverse systems and infrastructure. This fascinating essay describes the why using an ecological perspective.
That’s all for this week! unless you want to read about Nick Gray’s cool blind date in Tokyo.
