đ˛Get Paid For Anything
The end game of gig economy
Welcome to this weekâs edition of The Land of Random!
The internet is getting crazier - as Meta monetizes Instagram / Facebook / Whatsapp with paid plans. For the low price of $4 YOU TOO can stalk whoâs watching your stories multiple times and watch stories without being registered as a viewer . . . sheesh.
I canât help but wonder how much of the internet will be pay to play within the next decade. Think about how much the internet has changed since 2016.
Remember how many ads there were on Youtube then - and Youtube now.
Did you see that TechCrunch article about âthe next wave of social apps?â
Most of them reflect the whole âprivate social mediaâ trend thatâs been oh so slowly gaining traction.
So . . . so slowly. All we need is a champion like Retro or a similar app to go mega mainstream.
A lot of the ones Iâve discussed are in there like Retro, Airbuds, or Shelf - but thereâs a lot of new ones too! Make sure you check them out.
I canât help but think that the next 10 years will begin to tip the balance from the âbig social media appsâ to quieter more private replacements - especially as Gen Z takes over more of the âcool crowdâ vibe from aging millennials.
Did anyone get a chance to snag one of those Cash App wands? Itâs not my aesthetic so Iâll be waiting for the next one - but itâs a cool idea finally going mainstream (seriously itâs been around since at least 2012).
Letâs dive on in . . . to Black Mirror.
Get Paid For Anything
The idea of a âget paid for anythingâ type site has been around for a long time.
Itâs been explored in Westworld (the underworld RICO app), Black Mirror (common People), and even Guns Akimbo (the death match app).
Craigslist has strange requests, thereâs Cajole, Dare Market, weird fiverr requests, and now pump.fun has joined the fray.
Itâs all a bit âoh yeah this will go wrongâ mixed with degen crypto.
Oh i miss the days when crypto coins tried to at least claim cool use cases - now itâs all pump and dump meme coins.
Fiverr has weird stuff - like this Birthday section.
Usually these things stay in the silly / dumb realm.
Pump.fun has dumb dares like this one.
more permanent foolishness like this . . .
Apparently there were more concerning (suicide) bounties - but it appears pump.fun is taking these down.
As we dive deeper into the word of âmake money doing anythingâ (Polymarket / Kalshi) it makes sense that this kind of stuff keeps popping up. People want to make big money fast - and if they canât bet, what else can they do?
Fortunately itâs mostly just tattoos, spaghetti bathtubs, and that kind of thing.
BUT - itâs not hard to imagine that more destructive things might sneak through.
This kind of stuff is the dark side of the gig economy - with people doing anything to make some dough - even tattooing a memecoin on their forehead.
Keep an eye on this space. Maybe it stays in the shadows like âDare Marketâ and the like. Honestly, I kinda hope it stays that way, cuz noone wants the dystopia of assasination bounty apps.
Check out Pump.fun for educational purposes.
