Hello friends! How are you doing this fine Monday morning?

From Elon buying Twitter to the Otherside BAYC land sale wrecking the ETH blockchain, last week was wild!

Gas fees were like $800 a transaction on Opensea for a while on Saturday. EESH

OH - Don’t forget the fact that the Solana blockchain got botted to the point that they turned it off for a few hours.

Don’t get me wrong - Solana is awesome - but turning it off makes it sound like they still have a lot of work to do.

I’m curious to see what changes are made to Twitter over the months to come - Could it FINALLY become a profitable social media app? As someone who has used their advertising platform in the past I can tell you - it sucks. a lot.

I guess we’ll just have to wait and see . . . .

I just hope stories don’t come back. Ever. Don’t do it Elon. Stories only make sense on SC, IG, and FB.

Start your week off strong with some electronic city vibes. ā€œCity Driveā€ is a really fun album by CRISIS MACHINE x TWIN CRAB. Check it out on Bandcamp! Don’t miss the floppy disks for sale . . .

Let’s dive in, shall we?

šŸ‘©ā€šŸŒ¾Freight Farms

So you want to be a farmer, eh?

But there’s just one teensy tiny problem.

You live in a hellscape cookie cutter suburb with a ok sized backyard. There’s only enough room for the patio set, trampoline, and that playset.

WHERE’S THE GARDEN GOING TO GO?

Well - there’s a brand new company called ā€œFreight Farmsā€ that’s going to revolutionize the home garden industry. Heck - it’s going to be a HUGE entrepreneurial opportunity.

Let’s get into it.

First - watch this awesome hype video

Don’t have time to watch it?

Basically - a freight farm is a high tech vertical garden inside a shipping container.

source

Just a standard shipping container - you know? You could stick one of these in your backyard.

Inside are walls where you can grow your produce.

source

There’s a ton of tech stuffed inside these farms too.

  • The design enables you to grow over 2 acres of produce

  • You can grow all year round thanks to advanced insulation, HVAC, a CO2 Regulator, Dehumidifier, closed loop water system, dynamic lighting control, Precision Nutrient control, and more!

  • A smart assistant called Farmhand that monitors your garden. You can check and make changes from anywhere! Farmhand can even run growing programs called ā€œrecipesā€

Recipes are the complete automation package. Simply input the crop type you are growing and farmhand takes care of the rest. As the farmer network grows, so will the number of recipes, allowing you to program new crops, flavors, and colors, better nutrition, and more. Current recipes include our most popular crop types: Spring Mix, Lettuce, Herbs, and Flowers (source)

Freight Farms takes a lot of the work out of farming - and makes it easy for anyone to become a gardener and entrepreneur! You could easily sell crops to your friends and neighbors - or to local restaurants.

With all this tech comes a pretty premium price - buying one of these will set you back around 150K. Not cheap!

I imagine it could pay itself off over the course of a decade or so with a lot of ā€œsweat equityā€ in local sales - not to mention all the friends + connections you’d make.

šŸ’”Bioluminescent Lighting

LED lights are so 2008. The new thing is glowing bacteria.

In the wild - some living things produce their own light, like fireflies or glowing bacteria in the ocean.

A company called Glowee is trying to harness that natural light for everyday use.

Glowee is using a marine bacterium known asĀ aliivibrio fischeri. A salt-water tube contains nutrients and when air is flowing through the tube, the bacteria glow with a cool turquoise light. The bacteria enter an anaerobic state and stop glowing if you shut off the air. (source)

It’s like making Kombucha at home - but you can’t drink it.

Glowee is currently experimenting with the technology in Rambouillet, France.

little glowing lights

"Our goal is to change the way in which cities use light," says Sandra Rey, founder of the French start-up Glowee, which is behind the project in Rambouillet. "We want to create an ambiance that better respects citizens, the environment and biodiversity – and to impose this new philosophy of light as a real alternative." (source)

At the moment, Glowee is faced with the challenge of getting the proper amount of illumination to make them a viable alternative to traditional lights.

So far Glowee says its bacteria can produce an output of brightness of 15 lumens per square metre – short of, but not far off, the minimum 25 per square metre it believes is required for public lighting in parks and gardens. By comparison a 220 lumen household LED spotlight bulb can produce about 111 lumens per square metre of floor. (source)

I think it would be pretty cool to have some glowing lights - even if they were just night lights. Hopefully Glowee is able to achieve their goals and sell glowing bacteria lighting.

šŸŽ®Sideway ARG Game

Remember the old days when TV shows would make exclusive webisodes for the internet?

The Office, Walking Dead, and a few other notable shows got in on the trend for a few years.

Here’s a link to the IMDB for The Office: The Accountants - which was an entirely volunteer effort by the cast.

And here’s one to Flight 462 for The Walking Dead.

They were ā€œa fun bit of extraā€ that you could look forward to - special internet content made for the internet back in the days when everyone was bursting with ā€œtech optimismā€

We don’t see too much of that anymore . . .

There’s a new company called Sideway that hopes to change that with a really interesting fake social media app.

You could use Sideway to augment your existing content - or have the show live ENTIRELY in the fake social media app.

Yeah - that’s mindbending.

Social media is great for finding an audience for your movie or show, but once you have them, why are you sending them back to engage with your content on social media instead of staying in your world? When your audience is done watching your content, give them a place to continue engaging with the story! (source)

It’s an interesting approach to keeping your audience engaged. Rather than let them engage some of the time with your content on social media - feed them exclusive content in your app.

I could see this app working really well with sitcoms like The Office, Community, or shows like that.

Hmmmmmm. All those shows are long gone . . . What could Sideway work well for?

Netflix’s recent Schitt’s Creek or Space Force would be really fun.

Ooooh. A found footage film could be a lot of fun too!

I downloaded Sideway’s ā€œshowcase productionā€ Hartley to take a look at what an entire show could look like inside an app. It’s available on the Google Play and Apple App store.

source

It’s nothing like a traditional show in any sense of the word. Rather - the story comes at you in text message threads, private DM’s, comments on fake social media posts, exploring people’s fake accounts, and other interactions.

As you explore each piece of content - more content appears at the top of the feed.

You actively have to explore in order to discover the story - which makes it a lot more interesting than your 2010 ā€œchoose your own adventureā€ Youtube story.

I’m looking forward to see if any existing TV shows take advantage of this software.
