šŸ”Ŗ How to kill an idea, Rings that beat with your heart, and KFC embraces Beyond Meat!

thelandofrandom.substack.com

Hello again! Another week has flown by, and it’s good to see you.

I’ve got some crazy news about myself.

Next month I’m going to be a Father! šŸ’—

My wife and I are expecting a daughter in March.

It’s honestly just dawned on me over the past few days. I’m going to be a parent as of 7-8 weeks from now. This is the last month of my life without children.

Wow! It’s pretty exciting stuff.

Also, it’s February. Don’t forget about Valentines’ Day! Make a mental note. It’s only a little over a week away. Don’t let it sneak up on you.

So, let’s get to the fun stuff, shall we?

šŸ”Ŗ Kill Your Business Ideas

I found this method for testing new startup ideas that’s really interesting. It makes the most sense with a bigger budget to get the best data, but I believe anyone could probably try this at some kind of small scale.

PSL (a startup and VC firm) released a team member’s methodology for killing a business idea. Here are some key takeaways from what I read.

  1. Study the Keywords - What is the demand for what you’re selling?

  2. Data - What does the Data say? How much can we hypothetically make?

  3. Competition - Who are you competing against? What power do they have? Do we have a chance at success?

  4. Validation - Test Landing Page + FB/IG/Google Ad Spend! Do the ads work? Do they convert? What’s the data?

I sincerely recommend that you read the article in its entirety. It’s a great method - and crystallizes a lot of research into one place.

Kill Your Ideas

šŸ’Rings that beat with your ā¤

Sometimes, you see stuff that’s so out of this world, it’s hard to believe.

ā€œThe Touchā€ sells Heartbeat rings that actually beat in time with your partner’s ring. You see your partner’s heartbeat in real time! Seriously!

The rings work in conjunction with sensors, Bluetooth, and an app to send your heart beat to your loved one. Pretty cool!

The catch? They are pretty expensive, you have to ā€œapply to purchase,ā€ and it seems kinda sketchy . . .

This could be a real thing - or it could be ā€œVapor Tech.ā€ There are dozens of snazzy websites with cool products that don’t exist, or exist as some kind of poor mockery of the original vision. It was simply too hard to build, or they ran out of money to continue to create them. Here’s my tip about this kind of stuff.

  • If you can’t find any reviews - don’t buy it.

  • If it seems too cool to be true - it actually might be.

Who knows? I hope ā€œthe Touchā€ succeeds but I wouldn’t give them my money without seeing a real customer example. Here is a link to their example on Instagram.

According to the updates section, they are struggling to keep up with demand. They say they’ve been shipping out rings. Sadly, the last web update is from mid 2019, and the last IG post is from 2018. However, I can’t see any real examples on Youtube or Google. Surely someone would create a ā€œreal-lifeā€ video review with this product? šŸ¤”Things seem a bit fishy.

Anyway, I thought it would be cool to share. Check out the website if you’d like.

šŸ” KFC embraces Beyond Meat

They’ve done it with beef, pork, and now Beyond Meat is doing the ā€œimpossibleā€ with chicken too! Beyond Meat has partnered with KFC to make chicken nuggets that taste just like Chicken! Mark Wilson of Fast Company covered a tasting event. This is how he describes the nuggets.

It tastes like a doggone piece of chicken—and not just any piece of chicken, but a KFC piece of chicken with hints of those 11 herbs and spices. I fork and knife my way through the honey BBQ (perfectly too sweet, and the coating still crunchy), the buffalo (a touch vinegary for my taste but offering the uncanny aftertaste of chicken), and the Nashville (the deep pepper flavor has respectable heat that hits me a delightful 10 seconds later). Source

Sounds pretty tasty! I’m pretty excited about trying it. Just like the Impossible Pork we discussed the other week, Beyond Meat has striven to make sure that the chicken not only tastes - but looks and feels like chicken.

Beyond Fried Chicken flakes and shreds. (It’s anything but the grill-marked homogenous slabs of Beyond Chicken I bought from the freezer aisle years ago.) The meat is marinated to improve texture and impart extra KFC flavor. Meanwhile, KFC worked on the breading, opting for a coat that was similar to the company’s popcorn chicken. Source

I don’t know about you, but that’s a dealmaker for me. If it looks and tastes like Chicken, I will be more than happy to eat it. The Meatless Meat industry is finally hitting its stride, and I look forward to seeing what comes next! Honestly, if you invest in stocks - it might be a good idea to look at players in this growing industry!

🧠Do you have an internal monologue?

That’s right . . . do you have an internal voice running commentary on your life? That’s the theme of this article by Ryan Langdon. It’s simply fascinating - and will definitely get you thinking!

🄤Coke Energy is Here!

Coke has released a brand new energy drink called Coke Energy. I actually tried the product this week and it’s pretty good! I tried it earlier this week - It kind of tastes like Coke, but with a caffeinated kick. Check it out!

😭 Millennials are getting old

Millenials are no longer young people. That’s Gen Z. This is the first article in a while where that really hit home for me - it’s mainly about how TikTok is Gen Z’s platform to shine - and it’s true. TikTok is really the first ā€œGen Zā€ social media platform.
